Enzyme Lactase/ Inhibition
Understandings:
Immobilized enzymes are widely used in industry.
Lactase can be immobilized in alginate beads and experiments can then be carried out in which the lactose in milk is hydrolysed.

Analyze data on the number of copies of amylase (AMY 1) gene and the production of amylase in the digestion of starch. Analyze the relationship between AMY 1 gene copy number and dietary starch consumption among different populations.
Application: Methods of production of lactose-free milk and its advantages.
Watch to see the use of lactase in the production of lactose free milk
Enzymes have an active site to which specific substrates bind.
Enzyme catalysis involves molecular motion and the collision of substrates with the active site.

Application: Use of databases to identify potential new anti-malarial drugs.
Malaria is a life threatening disease caused by microscopic parasites (protists) called Plasmodium falciparum that are transmitted to human beings by Anopheles mosquitoes. The ineffective eradication strategies were due to the complex life cycle of Plasmodium and emergence of drugs resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) including Artemisinin and Artemisinin based combination therapy (ACT). Anopheles mosquitoes became resistive towards Pyrethroids, which are the only class of insecticides recommended for controlling these mosquitoes. Some new combination drugs therapies are in trials and have shown promise of reducing malaria. A vaccine is still being sought after. Narula AK, Azad CS, Nainwal LM.
